چکیده

We present recent experimental results of the use of electrostatic probes to characterize the differences seen in the low frequency instabilities (<200 kHz) in a laboratory Hall discharge operating in the ionization regime, i.e. at low voltages, where the ion current has not reached a maximum. Two very different wall materials are used in this study alumina and boron nitride. A wavelet decomposition analysis of the probe signals was used to determine the dispersion and turbulent broadening characteristics, which have a strong dependence on the axial location within the channel. The azimuthal direction of propagation is shown to be closely linked to the directions of the density and magnetic field gradient drifts. While the general behavior seen with the two wall materials is similar, a noticeable difference is in the location of the ionization zone, as determined by the location in the peak of the plasma density. The location of the ionization zone with alumina walls remains very close to where the magnetic field peaks, whereas with boron nitride walls, they are separated by 20-30 mm. As a result, the direction of the gradient driven electron drift in these two cases differ somewhat, leading to differences in the propagation characteristics of the disturbances. The possible impact that these disturbances in plasma density may have on electron transport properties is discussed. ________________________________________________________________________________________

Ionization and ablation phenomena in an ablative plasma accelerator

Several interrelated phenomena near the surface ablated into a discharge plasma, such as ablation and ionization in accelerated plasma are studied. Two characteristic ablation modes are identified, namely, ablation mode with a velocity at the Knudsen layer edge smaller than the local sound speed and a velocity at the Knudsen layer edge close to the sound speed. The existence of these two ablati...

Numerical Studies of Instabilities in a Magnetized Hall Discharge

An analysis is presented of low to moderate-frequency wave propagation in Hall thruster channels. Starting with extensive experimental data on the time-averaged, spatially varying plasma properties within a Hall discharge plasma, we subject this plasma to small (linear) perturbations in its properties. For this perturbation analysis, we assume a two-dimensional fluid description that includes a...

Bismuth Hall Thruster I: Simulation-suggested Design and Performance

A two-dimensional radial-axial hybrid simulation of the xenon-fueled Stanford Hall Thruster has been adapted to model a bismuth-fed thruster with varying channel geometry. The simulation treats the electrons as a quasi-one-dimensional fluid and the neutrals and ions as discrete superparticles advanced using a particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. Since experimental data of the electron cross-field m...

Experimental Investigation of High Frequency Plasma Oscillations Within Hall Thrusters

[Abstract] An experimental setup has been developed to measure high frequency plasma oscillations within the acceleration channel of a laboratory Hall thruster. The plasma oscillations are measured with three Langmuir probes separated by small axial and azimuthal offsets. This configuration permits the oscillations to be correlated with direction and wave number. This work is motivated by the a...
